Lachie Neale, the Brisbane Lions co-captain and two-time Brownlow Medalist
Lachie Neale is widely celebrated for his achievements on the AFL field. However, beyond the accolades and the intense competition of professional football, Lachie has discovered a role that brings him even greater joy and fulfilment: being a father.
Growing up on a farm, Lachie was surrounded by a loving, blended family, with his dad, Robbie, and stepdad, Brett, playing crucial roles in his upbringing. This close-knit environment instilled in him the importance of family and support, values that have greatly influenced his life both on and off the field. “I was lucky enough to grow up on a farm and had great support from my mum and stepdad, my dad close by, and brothers and sisters on both sides of the family,” Lachie reflects. His journey to the AFL was also shaped by the mentorship of Tim Lawrence, whom he met at 17. “Tim Lawrence helped me tremendously with my sporting ambitions… He helped guide me through the AFL process,” Lachie shares.
Lachie’s AFL career began in Perth, where he met his future wife, Julie, affectionately known as Jules. Although their relationship didn’t start immediately, their connection grew over time, leading to their marriage and the birth of their daughter, Piper, in 2021. Fatherhood has had a profound impact on Lachie, grounding him and providing a sense of purpose beyond football. “I love being a dad so much,” Lachie says. “Coming home after a day at training or a game, Piper’s smile and hugs make everything else that day feel less important.”
As Piper approaches her third birthday, her personality is blossoming, bringing daily laughter and joy into the Neale household. Lachie cherishes these moments and the simplicity they bring amidst the pressures of his AFL career. “Her personality is well and truly on show, and it makes me laugh every day without fail,” Lachie adds.
Lachie and Jules are now eagerly anticipating the arrival of their second child, a baby boy, due in December 2024. The journey to conceive has not been easy, involving challenges and the use of IVF. Lachie is incredibly proud of Jules for her strength and resilience throughout the process. “We have had trouble conceiving both times and went through IVF for our little boy due in December. I’m so proud of Jules and amazed at what she has gone through to make this happen,” Lachie expresses with gratitude.
Family plays a vital role in Lachie’s life, and having Jules and Piper watch him play brings him immense happiness and motivation. “I’ve said to Jules a few times that it’s the best feeling in the world knowing she and Piper are at the games watching me play,” Lachie says. He also notes that Piper has already shown an interest in sports, hinting that she might follow in her dad’s athletic footsteps. “Piper is pretty good with her catching and throwing already, so we might have a little netballer at this stage!” Lachie jokes.
Lachie draws parallels between his AFL career and his approach to parenting, particularly in the areas of patience and teamwork. “Being patient with your children can be hard at times, just like being patient with your teammates’ development or your own game,” Lachie observes. He strives to be fully present during family time, ensuring that his focus remains on his loved ones despite his demanding professional schedule.
One of Lachie’s favourite memories with Piper is from the Grand Final parade last year, which coincided with her birthday. “She came around in the Ute with me and waved to the crowd… It was a great story to tell her when she’s older!” Lachie recalls. Looking ahead, he is excited to see his children grow and develop, eager to support them in whatever paths they choose.
Lachie’s wife, Jules, is the heart of their family, managing to balance her career as a hairdresser with being an exceptional mother and partner. “Jules is amazing—she’s the glue that holds us all together,” Lachie says with admiration. Reflecting on Lachie’s role as a father, Jules adds, “I love how involved Lach is with Piper; he is so attentive to her needs and is very protective of her. I love watching them together, their bond is so special.” Together, they dream of taking their family on new adventures, with a trip to fly to Japan high on the list.
Lach is a very nervous flyer, most people wouldn’t think that as he flies so frequently but it’s something he’s never gotten better at and any sign of turbulence he freaks out - poor thing has to do it every second week too!

As he looks to the future, Lachie envisions a life filled with both continued involvement in sports and new adventures with his growing family. “We both love new adventures, so it could be anything!” Lachie exclaims, excited about the journey ahead.
