Joe Ingles, a five-time Australian Olympian and NBA star

Despite his impressive basketball career, Joe Ingles’s most cherished role is being a father to his three children: Jacob (8), Milla (8), and Jack (3). Balancing a demanding schedule with the NBA and Australian national team duties with fatherhood is challenging, but Joe finds immense joy in being a dad.

“It’s extremely hard being away from Renae and the kids. Our schedule is full-on, with tons of travel and games. I try to speak to them as much as I can. I’m very lucky to have such a supportive wife who takes amazing care of them and makes it easier for me to leave,” Joe shares.

His wife, Renae, an amazing athlete herself, is the rock of their household. “Renae is for sure the organised one and five steps ahead of everything… she runs our household. I do try to do my part when I am around and take the load off her. I could probably still do more,” Joe admits.

Despite his busy career, Joe priorities his family. He is fully present when he is home, whether taking the kids to the park, the beach, or enjoying downtime together. “We probably have different things with each one, but together, for sure, a park or beach. Anything outside they absolutely love. Milla loves going out for cake, which means I get to have a coffee. Jacob loves the pool, so taking him for his swimming lessons is always really enjoyable,” Joe explains.

Joe’s children are already showing an interest in sports, much like their father. “Milla, for sure, has more of an interest and is constantly asking if we are going to training or games. Jacob doesn’t understand as much but has been good at coming and watching the games. It’s amazing to have them in the crowd and be able to look up there and see Renae, Jacob, and Milla,” Joe says.

Fatherhood has taught Joe to appreciate the little moments with his children, every milestone is more meaningful. “There is nothing better; it puts life into perspective. I get no better feeling than seeing them achieve something, especially now with Jacob’s autism diagnosis—it really makes you take a step back and enjoy every little milestone. Every day is special, and we try to enjoy every moment we have with them. We are lucky parents,” he reflects.

Renae emphasises Joe’s dedication as a father, saying, “Joe adores the kids. Anything and everything he does is for them.

When Joe is home, he takes on a hands-on role with his children, participating in activities like school drop-offs and therapy sessions. He also loves to create memorable moments with them, from beach outings to simply enjoying family time at home.

Looking ahead, Joe is excited about future family adventures. The Ingles family plans to travel more together. Joe’s commitment to his family is evident in everything he does, and despite the challenges of balancing his career with fatherhood, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Through all the ups and downs, Joe remains grateful for the support of his wife, Renae, and the joy his children bring into his life. “The kids are happiest when he is home and with them,” says Renae. “There isn’t anything in the world that he wouldn’t do for them, and that makes him the best dad.”

Joe’s journey in the NBA is remarkable, but it’s clear that his most significant achievements are at home, being a loving and dedicated father to his three children.
